Mt. Bandai-san (Omote-bandai) and Lake Inawashiro-ko
Mt. Bandai-san (1,819 meter) bares a harsh crater to Bandai Plateau in the north side, the mountain shows a graceful figure as a composite volcano with a beautiful broad base in the southern side. Lake Inawashiro-ko is compared to a dressing glass reflecting the mountain, and is referred as "Tenkyo (Heaven's Mirror)". The mountain and lake make a good combination which is often used as representative scenery of Fukushima Prefecture.
Lake Inawashiro-ko is the third largest (about 103.32 square kilometer) fresh water lake in Japan. There are a few planktons and fish in the lake where acid water flows into. This lake is supposed to be also created by the eruption of Mt. Bandai-san, however it is not clearly explained. The 55 kilometer around shore of lake is divided into three by Inawashiro City (northeast shore), Koriyama City (southeast shore) and Aizuwakamatsu City (west shore). Sandy beaches where you can enjoy swimming are mainly located in the north shore in Inawashiro City, and they are also dotted with the south and west shore.
The area has been developed year by year as a long-stay resort district, boasting both the lake leisure in summer and the joy of skiing in large ski resorts taking advantage of long skirt of Mt. Bandai-san. Also, you should not miss the sightseeing facilities including the Noguchi Hideyo Memorial Hall and Tenkyo-kaku (national designated important cultural asset).
