Nikko National Park: Shirakawa-Kashi Plateau
The National Park straddles four prefectures of Fukushima, Gunma, Tochigi and Niigata. A part of Oze area which is a reservoir of alpine flowers and Shirakawa-Kashi Plateau in the north of Nasu area belong to Fukushima Prefecture. Shiraiawa-Kashi Plateau is a northern part of Nikko National Park, and it is located in the area of Kashi Onsen (hot spa) and Shin-kashi Onsen (in Saigo Village) at the eastern foot of Mt. Kashi-yama. The source of Abukuma-gawa River, a mother river in Nakadori area of Fukushima Prefecture, lies here. The scenery of fresh green and red leaves which is created by the deep primeval forests and valleys all over the place is an attractive sightseeing point.
Matsudaira Sadanobu, a lord of Shirakawa Clan in the later Edo Period, referred himself as "Raku-ou" after his retirement. He appreciated the beauty of this area, and he left the scenic points such as "Shoka Tei" and "Raku-ou Kei". The tourism development has been promoted, so there are National Nasu-Kashi Youth Nature Center and Kyororon Village, in addition to golf courses, resort villa area and amusement facilities. Shirakawa-Kashi Plateau offers various pleasures and scenery together with Nasu area (southern part of the pleateau in Nasu City, Tochigi Prefecture) which is connected to Shirakawa-Kashi area by Nasu-Kashi Toll Road.
