Dr. Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Museum

He was born in Inawashiro in 1876. When he was one and half years old he fell in the fireplace and got a deep burn on his left hand. In school, he was bullied by his classmates but he was outstanding in every subject. His teacher saw something genius in him and supported him to send to high school also raised money for the operation on his hand. The operation was almost successful. He could move his fingers a little. This made him determine to become a doctor. In 1896 he went to Tokyo and studied germ culture. In 1900 he began his research into the causes of Yellow Fever in the U.S. Then he went to some countries such as South America, Europe and Africa. But he got infected with Yellow Fever and died when he was engaged in his studies in Ghana, Africa at the age of 51 in 1928.

His birth home along with his memorial hall is in Inawashiro. You can see the fireplace in the house. Also you can see how a Japanese old farmhouse more than one hundred years ago looked like. It is well preserved. In the memorial hall, almost all visitors are moved to tears by Dr .Noguchifs motherfs letter among other things.
