Sukagawa Taimatsu Akashi Festival, began around 420 years and is considered one of the three big fire festivals in Japan.
After a procession around the town, each one of the 3-ton torches – made painstakingly by locals – are accompanied to Mt Grozan. At the end of the day, the 30 torches are burnt – an action which mirrors the blazing of Sukagawa Castle. The big fire lights up the festival, and the torches aflame against the night sky make for a splendid view in the evening light.
